Wood Floor Maintenance for a Polyurethane Finish

The key to lasting beauty of your wood flooring investment is proper maintenance for the life of your floor.

    • Your wood floors should be dust mopped, vacuumed or swept with a soft bristle broom as often as necessary, to remove grit and dust from the surface. Walking on dusty or dirty floor is the fastest way to damage a finish.

    • Your wood floors have been finished with a polyurethane finish.  You should use a wood floor cleaner that is recommended for polyurethane finishes.  It is suggested that you use Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner or Basic Coatings Squeaky Floor Cleaner.

    • NEVER wet-mop a wood floor.  Standing water can dull the finish, damage the wood and leave a discoloring residue.  When using any wood floor cleaner which requires mixing with water, follow the mixing directions precisely.  A cloth wetted with water and squeezed dry may be used to wipe up food and other spills, provided the area is dried immediately.

    • NEVER wax the urethane finish on your wood floors. NEVER use Murphy's Oil, Pledge, Mop & Glow, Pine Sol or similar products that contain wax and/or oils.  These will cause the wood to become slippery and appear dull.  The only remedy in this situation is to re-sand and finish the floor.
